Finding purpose and fulfillment after retirement i Finding purpose and fulfillment after retirement isn’t easy! Read one reader’s review of Climbing Down the Ladder:

“This heartfelt memoir had me laughing and crying, as Ms. Black expertly wove her childhood story with the story of her achievements and showed us what she needed to let go of, in order to reach fulfillment in retirement.

“There were so many relatable moments in Ms. Black’s book that I found myself exclaiming, ‘Yes!’ out loud, over and over again. She spoke about her childhood struggles with her weight, her efforts to balance career and family, the divorce from her first husband, her feelings of being marginalized after she sold her business, caring for ailing parents, and overcoming her own serious health scare. Her story is most every woman’s story to one degree or another, making this book such a worthwhile read.

“The rejection she felt from her parents at a young age because of her weight, created in Ms. Black a great sense of empathy, resolve, and resilience. She was determined to succeed in every step of her career – from retail, to law, to creating an enormously successful business in the legal temp agency world. When she sold that business, she was determined to find a new purpose. She felt aimless. She felt the need to continue to prove her worth. Facing an empty nest and a husband consumed by his own work, she felt ‘like an empty tube of toothpaste, entirely disposable.’

“She ultimately realized fulfillment wasn’t only about tallying her business triumphs. Through caring for her aging parents, having grandchildren, and surviving a serious health scare surrounded by loving friends and family, she learned to relish what she had already attained. She came to realize she no longer had to keep proving her value; that she was enough, just as she was. That is a lesson we all need to learn. Thank you, Laura Black.”

Add to that the pressure from social media to advertise our identity, we can easily fall trap into performing and projecting what we want others to see and, at the same time, feeling less than what we truly are. In this episode, Laura Black joins Whitney Lauritsen to help us overcome these external validations and untether our identities from them. Laura dives deep into that struggle to find success and beauty, especially for women who need to be both, as well as the challenge of being too much and not enough.”

"I think it's incredibly brave of the author to be "I think it's incredibly brave of the author to be so open and honest about both the triumphs and struggles of life, beginning with early childhood. I have no doubt that this will be of great benefit to readers and that everyone will have something to connect to in this book. I think the book will resonate most with women around retirement age, but I also very much enjoyed it and I am 39. We all have to face becoming caretakers to aging patients, difficult relationships with family members, and difficult relationships with ourselves. The author accomplishes this in such an honest way, really the way many of us are thinking privately but just can't seem to voice aloud. I applaud her for it." - Anonymous

"I could not put this book down! I did not know w "I could not put this book down! I did not know what to expect - I was thinking it would be one of those practical guides on how to decompress and plan the next stage of your life after you retire or leave the corporate world. It was not this and actually I got more out of it because it was not one of those generic self=help books. Laura's story resonated with me on so many personal and professional levels but in the end particularly on the personal level. Her angst about her body size, taking on more professional responsibility (and going out on her own), dealing with aging parents, becoming an empty-nester and grandmother -- I am not in all of these roles yet but certainly the path is emerging for me and found it comforting to hear her personal joys and struggles. There are some tips actually I gleaned including let go of the need to be "productive" all the time as a measure of success. Learn to enjoy the present moments more.. She talks about looking at certain aspects of your life and assessing if you feel you have "enough" in each of these buckets to balance out what matters. This book came out at the perfect time for me as I turn 60 this year and am asking myself 'what's next?'" - Ann

I desired to be thin, to be loved and accepted just as I was and to not be fat shamed by my family. Reading Laura's words were heartbreaking at times but also comforting to know I wasn't alone.

I admire all that Laura has achieved and it was interesting to read about how she balanced motherhood with her career life. Her writing is strong and captures you right away. It's descriptive and raw." - Kelly

"Climbing Down the Ladder was a magic carpet ride "Climbing Down the Ladder was a magic carpet ride of humor, sadness, and everything in between that makes up life as we know it. The writing is sharp and witty, while also honest and vulnerable. Laura has a real story to tell. There are few people talking about the phase of life that happens after we’ve done all the things everyone tells you to do. Laura is giving voice to this point in time. Laura takes us on her journey of finding authenticity despite a culture that taught her to quiet down, tuck it in, and play the part. Read the book - you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and more than anything you’ll learn that being yourself is the tool that’s going to get you where you need to go." - Annie
